Jörg Widmann, who has been in close artistic contact with Kent Nagano, particularly since the great success of his ARCHE for the opening of the Elbphilharmonie, has recently written a decidedly peaceful work in view of the global wars: »Cantata in tempore belli«. Jens Harzer takes on the role of narrator. Ida Aldrian sings the alto part.

However, her encounter with Alfredo makes her pleasure-seeking life seem questionable: they fall in love and try to build a life for themselves, far from the fast pleasures of the city. Her past, however, catches up with Violetta. Alfredo’s father persuades her that a separation is the only way to restore his family honour. Alfredo, unaware of the true reasons for her decision, insults Violetta in public. When they are finally reunited, Violetta has run out of time. Giuseppe Verdi was on the lookout for such a provocative, innovative tale when he encountered the novel La Dame aux Camélias by Alexandre Dumas the Younger. In the spring of 1852 he saw the “Lady of the Camellias” as a play adapted by the writer himself at the Vaudeville Theatre in Paris. The impression this made on him strengthened his resolve to use the tale for his next opera; the story gave him an opportunity to reformulate his grand theme: love defeated by the resistance of society. Philharmonic Chamber Music Recital

Richard Strauss’ »Capriccio« seems remote from the world, in the face of the cruelty witnessed in the Second World War. The musical means of the late 19th century are used here in the 20th century to describe the time of the late 18th century. In the string sextet where the action begins, the »rapture« from earth is captured as though in a tableau. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Third String Quartet was also thought to not be of its time, in a very different way. Described as the »patchwork of a madman«, this »crazy« music was met with incomprehension by the public. Beethoven though was deliberately seeking to challenge expectations when he took chamber music out of the living room and into the major concert halls of the day.
